1When to use one
An invoice that was sent should not be edited: the client and your accountant already have it. A credit note is the document that corrects it. Use one for a discount agreed after sending, a part of the work that was not delivered, or to cancel the whole invoice.
2Issue a credit note
- Open the invoice and click More → Issue a credit note.
- Choose Whole invoice (the lines are copied) or Part of it (one line with what you are crediting and the amount).
- Add a reason if you like; it is printed on the PDF. Pick the date and click Issue credit note.
The credit note gets its own number based on the invoice (CN-INV-2026-007, then CN-INV-2026-007-2 for a second one) and a PDF in the client's language, with the invoice it corrects. Credit notes are listed on the invoice page.
3What it changes
| Where | Effect |
|---|---|
| The invoice | What the client still owes goes down by the credit. The invoice PDF and the client's invoice page show the credit and the new balance. |
| Whole invoice, not paid | The invoice is cancelled (void) and nothing is owed. |
| Paid in part, credited for the rest | The invoice is marked paid. |
| Reminders and card payments | They use the balance after credits, so the client is never asked for money they no longer owe. |
| Reports | Profit and loss subtracts the credit on the credit note's date. Form 5472 income uses the invoice net of credits. |
You cannot credit more than the invoice total minus earlier credits. Invollc does not send refunds: refund card payments from your Stripe dashboard, and bank payments from your bank.
